Shower niches and why they are amazing!
Today I want to talk about niches! I’ve heard many names for niches but in simple they are a recessed space in your shower that creates a ledge or shelf to hold things such as shampoo and soaps. They are super functional and in my eyes should be in every shower! Not only are they functional but they add a new level of detail and depth that is just downright beautiful. Adding the element of a niche also adds a chance to explore some more design options in your shower. Your niche can be designed to blend in or stand out! You can use a different tile in the back of the niche to make it pop or have wall tile flawlessly wrap and blend into the recessed area.
So let’s talk about how the actual build of the niche is accomplished because there’s a lot that goes into getting it right. First off is the framing. In order to create a niche, you have to install wallboard in-between the studs in your shower wall. So preplanning and preparation are key! You want to make sure your niche is set at a height that goes with your tile. You don’t want little sliver cuts around your niche! Having your end goal in mind before installing your niche is key!!! The next step and most important is waterproofing that thing! That tile you just put inside your moisture-sensitive wall is not going to stop the water! You need to waterproof the backer board you used to create the niche whether it’s a liquid-applied or a membrane make sure it’s watertight before tile!
If you're having a shower done in your home I would highly recommend adding a niche or two! Just be sure to plan the design ahead of time and get a qualified installer to make it happen!
